Fill out the form to get started
You know that feeling. It’s Friday night, you’ve had a long week, and all you can think about is a sleep-in, a good coffee, and maybe a wander around the markets on Saturday morning. The thought of hitting the gym and doing strength training feels… heavy.
This is where most people lose the battle for consistency. We fall into the trap of thinking fitness has to be an all-or-nothing, full-throttle sprint every single day. We set these huge goals like “I’ll train six days a week!” only to then feel like a failure when life inevitably gets in the way. Sound familiar?
But here’s a little secret we’ve learned from coaching everyday people with their strength training in Canberra: The real secret to staying consistent isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being relentlessly, stubbornly imperfect.
The All-or-Nothing Trap
We’ve all been there. You miss one gym session, and suddenly, the whole week feels ruined. That single missed workout snowballs into a guilt trip, which turns into another missed day, and before you know it, you’re back to square one, feeling like a failure.
This mindset is the enemy of progress. Why? Because life in Canberra, like life anywhere, is messy. You get sick, work runs late, the kids have a school event, or you simply need a mental health day. Trying to force perfection is like trying to drive a nail with a marshmallow, it’s never going to work.
The Power of Showing Up (Imperfectly)
At StrengthXP, we teach our clients to focus on one thing: showing up. Not showing up for a perfect, 90-minute, record-breaking session. Just showing up.
Maybe it’s a shortened 45-minute workout instead of your usual hour. Maybe it’s just a few simple sets of squats and presses. Maybe it’s simply walking in, having a chat with your coach and the community, and doing a few mobility drills before you head off.
The goal is to build the habit, not to win a gold medal every single time you train.
Think of your routine as a chain. Every time you show up, you forge a link. The strength of the chain isn’t in the size of each link, but in the fact that it never breaks.
Here are a few ways to embrace this “imperfect consistency” on those tough days:
- Shrink the Goal: If you planned an hour-long session, commit to just 20 minutes. You’ll be surprised how often you end up doing more.
- Focus on the Habit, Not the Result: The point isn’t to burn a certain number of calories; it’s to reinforce the habit of going to the gym. The results will follow.
- Acknowledge Your Effort: Did you choose to come in on a Saturday instead of sleeping in? That’s a huge win! Acknowledge it. Celebrate it.
- Talk to Your Coach: Tell your coach you’re feeling a bit flat. A good coach will help you adjust your plan for the day, so you still get a great workout without burning yourself out.
